Meeting with Mr. Andris Piebalgs, Commissionner for Development European Union Commission

Brussels – On June 26th 2013, the European Union (EU) Commissioner Piebalgs received a delegation of UCLG Africa (UCLG-A) headed by Mrs. Moustache Belle Mayor of Victoria, Seychelles, member of the UCLG Africa executive committee. This meeting was organized following a request for appointment sent to Commissioner Piebalgs by UCLG-A president, Mr.Khalifa Sall, Mayor of Dakar, Senegal.
UCLG-A Secretary General asserted UCLG-A’s intention to play the role of coordination platform between the EU and African local governments and their associations following the EU’s new communication on local authorities. UCLG-A representatives also voiced their local governments’ demands for more support from the EU’s African cooperation programs. Commissioner Piebalgs replied by welcoming this interest and promising a response during his attendance of the UCLG world congress in October 2013 in Rabat, Morocco.
