UCLG Africa Organizes a Side Event within the Habitat III Conference in Quito, October 2016
UCLG Africa will organize a side event within the Habitat III Conference, which will take place in Quito, Ecuador, from 17 to 20 October 2016. The United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development-Habitat III side events provide a platform for national, regional and local governments as well as a wide range of stakeholders to present studies and projects on specific topics of relevance to the thematic of the entire event.
Hence, UCLG Africa has seized this opportunity to hold a side event during Habitat III focusing on its newly established programme, the African Local Government Academy (ALGA). The theme of the side event is « The Challenge of Human Capital in Local Government: Time to Act is now for the New Urban Agenda» and will take place in partnership with ALGA Anchor Institutions, Cities Alliance, the World Bank Institute, and the African Development Bank Group.
Aware of the importance of strengthening the capacity of local governments, UCLG Africa defined as one of its main goals to strengthen the capacities of local governments in order to ensure the full provision of services to their population. That is why, UCLG Africa, at the request of its members, created ALGA to help reinforce the managerial capacities of elected officials and improve the professionalism and skills of senior staff of African Local Governments.
In light of the above, the side event will put emphasis on:
- Strengthen key partnerships with the members of the academia, local authorities, and donors,
- Identify, negotiate with new partners,
- Implement the 4 pillars of the Academy, namely the Accreditation system, the Standardization of local jobs, the Innovation in training and capacity building, and the Networking among local employees.
The Side event will take the format of a short presentation highlighting the critical issues followed by a plenary session, with Q & A be a Panel. Key participants of this session will include Regional Anchor Institutions of ALGA and Partners.
