UCLG Africa at the European Development Days 2017

United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) will take part in the European Development Days-EDD 2017, taking place in Brussels, 7-8 June 2017, alongside the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR)-PLATFORMA; United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG); the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF); and the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF).

UCLG Africa, UCLG, CEMR-PLATFORMA, AIMF and CLGF are the five major associations of local and regional authorities that signed the Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA) with the European Commission in 2015.  This partnership is evidence of the EU’s position that “Local and regional authorities’ expertise represent an asset to implement the EU international agenda, in particular regarding: sustainable development, local governance, climate change, migration, gender equality and economic growth.”

The aforementioned organizations will convene together in the Global Village City Hall at Stand 46. The stand will be located in the center of the EDD Global Village (EDD Global Village Map) and will comprise of 4 areas:

– The ‘Operations Room’ where 17 examples will be presented demonstrating the ways in which the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are implemented by towns, cities and regions.

– The e-library space where there will be a demonstration of paperless documentation from the 5 organizers, which will be exhibited on tablets.

– The City Council Room where short presentations and exchanges with the organizers will take place and where UCLG Africa will present ‘Local Entrepreneurship – A Tool for Local Government Job Creation,’ a successful pilot initiative that will provide local governments in Africa with practical solutions for SME development and job creation. See below to access report

– The Local Governments Wall where there will be a visual display showing pictures of support for our actions.

Furthermore, UCLG Africa’s secretary general, Mr. Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, will speak at a session listed under Demography and Development in DebateD1, Thursday, June 8, 2017 – 10:45 to 12:00. The theme will be  “The place where the battle for sustainable development will be won or lost: How can cities become inclusive and affordable drivers of economic growth and social development?”
