Sustainability Week in South Africa: Forum of African Capital Cities for Sustainability

UCLG Africa Secretary General participated in the Forum of African Capital Cities for Sustainability at the invitation of Cllr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Executive Mayor of Tshwane.

The Forum was also attended by over 20 African cities from outside South Africa, green economy practitioners as well as the academia.

 

At its official opening ceremony, the Forum had the privilege to receive a keynote speech by Her Excellence Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The Forum resolved to establish itself as a platform of African cities dealing with sustainability issues that will meet on a yearly basis. The next year meeting being scheduled to take place still in the City of Tshwane. The Forum further resolved to put in place an African Urban Observatory Project, to be a shared instrument rallying the efforts of African Cities to monitor progress towards improving their sustainability in addressing the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Forum finally resolved that a meeting will be held in the framework of the Africities Summit scheduled from 29 November to 3 December 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa, to put across the positions of African cities with regard to the discussions to be held at the COP21 meeting in Paris.
