Key Decisions of UCLG Executive Bureau Meeting in Kazan
The latest meeting of United Cities and Local Governments-UCLG Executive Bureau was held in Kazan, Russia, from 25 to 27 May 2016. This meeting was the last gathering of the members of the executive bureau before the World Summit of Bogota scheduled from 12 to 15 October 2016.
This meeting was divided into several sessions. Aside from the statutory meetings (Financial Management Committee, Committee on Statutory Affairs, Executive Bureau), the Committee on Urban Strategic Planning, the Working Group on Intermediary Cities and the Taskforce on Local Government Disaster Response gathered their members. The members of the executive bureau also seized this opportunity to define the key priorities of UCLG for the 2016-2022 mandate.
Moreover, the members of the executive bureau who attended the meeting witnessed the announcement of the candidatures of the City of Johannesburg and the City of Kazan for the UCLG Presidency. The Mayor of Joburg, Mr. Parks Tau, shared his interest in helping the organization to take on a leading role in implementing the development agenda and New Urban Agenda with the Executive Bureau.
In this regard, the manifesto of the candidacy of the City of Johannesburg for the presidency of UCLG was officially launched during the meeting of the executive committee of UCLG Africa in May 2016 in Rabat. The manifesto is available here.
The winners of the second edition of the “International Award UCLG – MEXICO CITY – Culture 21” during the Executive Bureau session in Kazan. The winners in the “City, local or regional government” category were Timbuktu and Vaudreuil-Dorion, while Jon Hawkes and Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui received awards in the individual category.
