Theme of the African Day of Decentralization and Local Development 2018: “Fighting corruption at the local level, a sustainable way to transform Africa from its territories”
Celebrated on 10 August every year, this year’s African Day of Decentralization and Local Development (JADDL) will be placed under the theme: “Fighting corruption at the local level, a sustainable way to transform Africa from its territories”.
The Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission communicated the theme on 13 July 2018. The sub Themes are as follow:
Sub-theme 1: Corruption and conflict of interest in the management of local authorities: an impediment to the basic services to local populations, social justice, and peace to local populations;
Sub-theme 2: Good local governance and promotion of the role of civil society and the media: guarantee for success in curbing corruption in these areas.
UCLG Africa calls upon all Local Authorities of the continent to mark this celebration on August 10, 2018. During Regional Strategic Meetings, UCLG Africa raised awareness of its members on this important issue for local governments.
