Colonel Boubacar Soumana Garanké: President of the Association of Niger Municipalities
Colonel Boubacar Soumana Garanké, who has been at the head of the Association of Niger Municipalities (AMN) since October 2024, is the Managing Director of the city of Niamey, and has a number of initiatives underway in the capital and on behalf of the AMN.
During April 2025, the focus was on training for young people and women, as well as the organisation of the 12th Public Hygiene Day.
On Friday 25 April 2025, as part of the development of local authorities for the rebuilding of Niger, the Deputy Administrator of the City of Niamey and President of the Association of Municipalities of Niger, attended the opening of the ‘Information and awareness-raising days for youth and women representatives’ in the City of Tahoua, on the theme of ‘Role and responsibilities in local governance for responsible and sustainable civic engagement’. The meeting provided an opportunity to equip the young people and women, who represent the Consultative Commissions (CC), with the skills they need to support good local governance in a spirit of sustainable, responsible civic engagement. Colonel Boubacar Soumana Garanké was delighted to note the cohesion between the competent authorities of the city of Tahoua, the young people and the women in carrying out the AMN’s missions.
On 23 April 2025, the final validation workshop was held for the exploratory study of the Niamey Safe City program, an initiative led by the City of Niamey in partnership with UN Women Niger. The programme is part of the international ‘Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces’ initiative led by UN Women, which aims to guarantee the safety, equality and inclusion of women and girls in urban spaces. The exploratory study validated at this workshop was carried out in a collaborative manner, integrating local data and national and international expertise.
On 26 April 2025, the city of Niamey launched the 12ᵉ edition of Public Health Day, an event that is now part of the calendar of citizen initiatives to beautify the capital. The municipal authorities mobilised to officially kick off the day under the theme ‘Cleanliness and salubrity in the neighbourhoods of the city of Niamey’. This year’s event emphasised the need for every citizen to take responsibility for maintaining a healthy and pleasant environment.
The launch ceremony was followed by a major awareness-raising campaign focusing in particular on the regulation of car washes, a key sector in the preservation of urban quality. The aim was to remind people of the importance of complying with environmental standards in order to prevent the deterioration of urban infrastructure and soil pollution.
