Abidjan hosts the West Africa regional caucus of UCLG Africa (PRESS RELEASE)








From 18 to 19 February 2022, United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) is holding its regional caucus for the West Africa region at the Ivotel hotel in Abidjan (Ivory Coast).

The Ivorian capital will host the caucus for the UCLG Africa members of the West Africa Region, in preparation of the 9th Africities Summit scheduled from 17 to 21 May 2022 in Kisumu, Kenya. The theme of the Summit is: « The Role of Intermediary Cities of Africa in the Implementation of Agenda 2030 of the United Nations and the African Union Agenda 2063 ».

During the Africities Summit, members will be elected to the governing bodies of UCLG Africa.

The caucus will allow the local authorities of the West Africa region to define their expectations of the Summit, and to nominate their candidates to the various governing bodies of UCLG Africa. Each region must nominate: 9 candidates among the 45 members of the Pan-African Council elected by the general assembly, 3 candidates among the 15 members of the Executive Committee, 1 candidate among the 5 members of the Financial Management Commission, 1 Vice President among the 5 members of the Presidency, and possibly 1 candidate for the position of President of UCLG Africa.

The regional caucus for the West Africa region will also nominate candidates to the governing bodies of the Network of Locally Elected Women of Africa (REFELA) and the Network of Locally Elected Youth of Africa (YELO).

This caucus is organized under the patronage of His Excellency the Prime Minister of Ivory Coast.

The official opening of the meeting will witness the participation of the following personalities:

· His Excellency Mr. President of the Senate of Ivory Coast

· Mr. Director-General of Decentralization and Local Development in Ivory Coast

· Mr. Danho Paulin Claude, President of the Union of Cities and Municipalities of Côte d’Ivoire (UVICOCI)

· Ms. Dao Coulibaly, President of the UCLG Africa Network of Locally Elected Women of Africa (REFELA)

· Mr. Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, Secretary General of UCLG Africa

This meeting will be held in the presence of the presidents of national associations of local authorities, leaders of the Network of Local Elected Women of Africa (REFELA), young local elected officials, and permanent secretaries of national associations of local authorities from West African countries.
