3rd Guangzhou Award: Two African Cities Shortlisted

The 3rd cycle of the Guangzhou International Urban Innovation Award will take place from 5 to 8 December 2016, in the city of Guangzhou, China.

This year, the hosts will organize the Guangzhou International Urban Innovation Conference and the Guangzhou International Innovation Festival seen as the ideal way to display the joint efforts of cities around the world to build a better future.

 

In fact, the conference aims to highlight innovative ideas and excellent practices of cities and local governments around the world and to bring all of them together to achieve mutual development and shared prosperity.

The shortlisted cities for the 3rd Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award) were announced during the UCLG World Summit in Bogota and they include two African cities. Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Qalyubeya (Egypt) will try to follow the steps of Lilongwe (Malawi) and Dakar (Senegal), which won the Guangzhou Award respectively in 2013 and 2014.

The other shortlisted cities are Asuncion (Paraguay), Boston (United States), Brussels (Beem Belgium), Copenhagen (Denmark), Jakarta (Indonesia), La Paz (Bolivia), Luleburgaz (Turkey), Malang (Indonesia), Menashe (Israel), Ramallah (Palestine), Songpa-gu (Korea), Tampere (Finland) and Tlajomulco de Zuñiga (Mexico).

The winners will be announced during the Guangzhou International Urban Innovation Conference. Moreover, the conference will include an opening ceremony, seminars, thematic forums and several other happenings allowing participants to explore issues of urban innovation and development across the world.

Furthermore, the Guangzhou Award is jointly hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, United Cities and Local Governments, World Association of the Major Metropolises and the City of Guangzhou.
