The City of Lagos Hosts the Statutory Meetings of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa)

On November 6 and 7, 2023, the Executive Committee and the Pan-African Council of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) will hold their 30th and 27th  ordinary session at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja Gra in Lagos, Nigeria.

The 30th session of the Executive Committee, which will take place on November 06, 2023, at 2:30 p.m., will focus on the adoption of the UCLG Africa 2024 work plan and 2024 budget. The members of the Committee will also discuss the preparation of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), the annual summit of the UNFCCC’s decision-making body (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), scheduled on November 30 to December 12, 2023, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The official opening of the 30th session of the Executive Committee will be marked by the presence of, among others:

– Mrs. Fatimetou Abdel Malick, President of the Region of Nouakchott (Mauritania) and President, UCLG Africa,

– Hon. Kolade David Alabi, President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON)

– Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Governor of Kisumu County (Kenya) and Vice-President of UCLG Africa for The Eastern Africa Region

– Mr. Claude Paulin Danho, President of the Union of Cities and Municipalities of Côte d’Ivoire (UVICOCI) and Vice-President of UCLG Africa for the West Africa Region;

– General Jude Ibrahim Rapontchombo,representing the City of Libreville and UCLG Africa Vice-President for the Central Africa Region;

– Mrs. Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul (Gambia), and President of the Network of the Locally Elected Women of Africa (REFELA);

– Gov. AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman, Executive Governor of Kwara State (Nigeria) representing Forum of the Regions of Africa (FORAF)

– Mr. Buba Abubakar, Chairman of Lere Local Government (Nigeria) and Vice-President of the Network of the Young Local Elected Officials of Africa (YELO) for West Africa

– Mr. Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, Secretary General of UCLG Africa.

November 6 is also the date on which UCLG Africa’s Locally Elected Women of Africa Network (REFELA) will hold its Board meeting online.

The Pan-African Council, responsible for overseeing the work of UCLG Africa between ordinary sessions of the organization’s General Assembly, will meet on November 7, 2023, at 9am.

The Nigerian and international press are invited to cover the opening ceremony of the 30th ordinary session of the UCLG Africa Executive Committee on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 2 :30 p.m. at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja Gra in Lagos.

As a reminder, the Executive Committee of UCLG Africa is the body responsible for the political leadership of the organization. The Executive Committee comprises 18 members, 15 members elected by the General Assembly from among the members of the Pan-African Council (3 for each of the 5 regions of Africa) to which is added ex-officio, the President of the Network of Locally Elected Women of Africa (REFELA, Standing Committee for Gender Equality of UCLG Africa), the President of the Forum of the Regions of Africa (FORAF) and the President of the Network of Young Local Elected Officials of Africa (YELO).

The Pan-African Council of UCLG Africa is the body in charge of the annual supervision of the conduct of the affairs of UCLG Africa between the meetings of the General Assembly which take place every three (3) years within the framework of the Africities Summits. The Pan-African Council comprises forty-five (45) active members elected by the General Assembly, i.e. nine (9) for each of the five sub-regions of Africa.
