MALAWI REFELA Chairperson, Mrs Gertrude Chirambo encouraged senior citizens in the community to continue to be active in their retirement by imparting the cultural and various skills to the younger generation. This was held in Blantyre on Thursday 27 July 2022 at the resource centre. 70 senior citizens were present aged between 67-89 years.
She also shared with the group of initiative that she did wirh 20 girls to make hand woven rugs for sale . These rugs were made by girls and women during the covid pandemic. As schools were closed a lot of girls were idle. She used the opportunity to engage the girls in productive activities to keep them busy but also to teach the girls a skill which can help generate money to meet some of their needs. This was a time where reports showed an increase in pregnancies in girls as they were idle during Covid. It was reported that Some 400 girls in the district had unplanned pregnancies. “As of now we are searching for a sponsor to teach another cohort of girls in the rugs and also we are looking for market to sell the rugs internationally so as to help the girls and women.
Amongst the speakers on the day was former Malawi Minister of Women, Children Affairs and Community Development, Hon. Queen Gondwe (80) .
She has just authored a book on how to raise children so that they become better citizens and leaders. She herself as a grandmother shared her experiences and a chapter inthe book which encourages the grandmothers to continue to love, care and share wisdom with the grandchildren.
The senior women were given gifts wrapped in fabric.
And the representative of the group, Ms Mpunga thanked Madam Chirambo for always reaching out to senior citizens in times of need with food items and packages.
