A UCLG Africa delegation paid a courtesy visit to the President of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahamat Moussa Faki

On 11 September 2024, a UCLG Africa delegation paid a courtesy visit to the President of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahamat Moussa Faki  at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The UCLG Africa delegation was led by its President, Mrs. Fatimetou Abdel Malick, and included the Secretary General of the organization, Mr. Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi.
Mrs. Fatimetou Abdel Malick, President of the Nouakchott Region, hand-delivered to the President of the African Union Commission a letter from the current Chairperson of the African Union, H.E. Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
The courtesy visit also offered an opportunity to discuss collaboration and cooperation between the African Union and UCLG Africa, including the signing of an MoU organizing their partnership. President Moussa Faki Mahamat insisted on the necessity of having an ongoing structured dialogue between the African Union institutions and UCLG Africa since subnational and local governments are more and more at the forefront in managing urbanization and its impacts on the daily living conditions of the populations. He therefore called to reinforce the partnership between the AU Commission and UCLG Africa in matters pertaining to decentralization, local governance, local economic development, and decentralized cooperation between African subnational and local governments, thus participating in accelerating the dynamic of structural transformation, integration and unity in Africa, as called upon by the Agenda 2063 of the African Union.
