World Cities Day 2018

World Cities Day aims to promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization, enhance cooperation among countries and cities in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contribute to sustainable urban development. The overall World Cities Day theme is Better City, Better Life and this year’s particular theme is Building Sustainable and Resilient Cities. The main event will be celebrated in Liverpool, UK.

African Day of Decentralization and Local Development 2018

Celebrated on 10 August every year, this year’s African Day of Decentralization and Local Development (JADDL) will be placed under the theme:

“Fighting corruption at the local level, a sustainable way to transform Africa from its territories”.

The sub Themes are as follow:

Sub-theme 1: Corruption and conflict of interest in the management of local authorities: an impediment to the basic services to local populations, social justice, and peace to local populations;

Sub-theme 2: Good local governance and promotion of the role of civil society and the media: guarantee for success in curbing corruption in these areas.

The Climate Chance Summit – Africa 2018

The Climate Chance Summit – Africa of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast will serve to bring together non-state climate actors in Africa at the beginning of summer 2018 and primarily to set up sectoral and operational roadmaps adapted to the context in African territories. The summit will thus serve to establish messages specific to the African continent, to demonstrate its commitment as well as to clarify the specific demands and proposals of the local actors who combat climate change in Africa.

European Development Days 2018

 

European Development Days 2018 (EDD 2018) will seek to bring together the European Union’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The overall theme for EDD 2018 is, ‘Women and Girls at the Forefront of Sustainable Development: protect, empower, invest’. Three sub-themes will be considered: Ensuring the physical and psychological integrity of Girls and Women; Promoting economic and social rights and Empowerment of Girls and Women; and Strengthening Girls’ and Women’s voice and participation.

2nd Edition of the African Forum of Territorial Managers

 

 

On the occasion of the UN Public Service Day which will be celebrated in Marrakesh on the 21 to 23 June 2018, UCLG Africa, in partnership with the Oriental Region of Morocco, organize the second edition of the African Forum of Territorial Managers and Training Institutes targeting the local authorities in Africa, in the city of Saidia, in Eastern Morocco, from 25 to 26 April 2018.

18th Session of UCLG Africa Executive Committee

The 18th Session of UCLG Africa Executive Committee will be held on the 14th of May, 2018, in Rabat. The Executive Committee of UCLG Africa is the body responsible for the political leadership of UCLG Africa between sessions of the General Assembly of UCLG. The Executive Committee is made up of 16 members, 15 members representing each of the 5 regions of the continent (with 3 locally elected representatives from each of the 5 regions), and the President of the Network of Local Women in Africa (REFELA).

Launch of the Africities 8 Summit

 

UCLG Africa and the Moroccan Government will officially launch the Africities 8 Summit, on 15 May 2018 in Rabat. This ceremony will mark the beginning of the countdown to the actual holding of the summit scheduled for the 20 to 24 November 2018 in Marrakech. The theme for this 8th edition of Africities Summit is “The transition towards sustainable cities and territories: The role of African local governments.”

Coordination and Harmonization Meeting of the Educational/Pedagogical Content of the Executive Master in City Management (EMCM)

With the support of the European Commission, UCLG Africa’s African Local Governments Academy (ALGA) is holding a meeting for the coordination and harmonization of the Educational/Pedagogical Content of the Executive Master in City Management (EMCM) in Rabat from 26 to 29 March 2018.

8th World Water Forum

The World Water Forum is the world’s biggest water-related event and is organized by the World Water Council (WWC), an international organization that brings together all those interested in the theme of water. Its mission is “to promote awareness, build political commitment and trigger action on critical water issues at all levels, to facilitate the efficient conservation, protection, development, planning, management and use of water in all its dimensions on an environmentally sustainable basis for the benefit of all life on Earth”.
