Terms of Reference: Recruitment of Climate Science Adaptation Expert (Individual Long-term Consultant)

1. Background:
The establishment of an Adaptation Project Preparation Incubator for Africa (APIA), geared towards incubating projects preparation for implementation of climate actions in Africa with an emphasis and on developing the capacity of African direct access entities (DAE) to expand adaptation investments, has been decided. The action is underpinned by adaptation priorities identified nationally and through regional convening, building on AAI existing and ongoing efforts as a continental platform.
Africa Adaptation Initiative, in collaboration with UCLG Africa, is therefore seeking a highly qualified and experienced Climate Science Adaptation Expert for the Adaptation Project Incubator for Africa (APIA) project. This initiative is dedicated to enhancing climate resilience in Africa, and the selected expert will contribute significantly to providing scientific expertise for informed climate adaptation strategies and interventions.

2. Objectives of the Position:

The Climate Science Adaptation Expert will be responsible for:
1. Conducting comprehensive climate science assessments to identify current and future climate risks.
2. Providing technical guidance on climate change adaptation strategies and measures.
3. Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to integrate climate science into adaptation planning and decision-making processes.
4. Supporting the development and implementation of climate-resilient projects and initiatives.
5. Familiarity with international climate funds, Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Adaptation Fund (AF)

3. Key Responsibilities:

The Climate Science Adaptation Expert will be tasked with the following responsibilities:
1. Conduct climate vulnerability and risk assessments to identify potential impacts on ecosystems, communities, and infrastructure.
2. Analyze climate data, models, and projections, with specific expertise in climate modeling using CMIP6 models or IPCC models, to inform adaptation planning and decision-making.
3. Develop and communicate climate science information to diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, communities, and project teams.
4. Provide technical input into the design and implementation of climate adaptation projects.
5. Collaborate with relevant institutions, researchers, and experts to stay abreast of the latest developments in climate science.

4. Qualifications and Experience:

1. Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in climate science, atmospheric science, environmental science, or a related field ;
2. Proven expertise in climate science and demonstrated experience in climate change adaptation projects ;
3. Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex climate science information ;
4. Experience in using climate models, GIS, and other relevant tools for climate analysis, with specific expertise in CMIP6 models or IPCC models ; and
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey scientific information to non-specialist audiences.

5. Duration and Location:

The initial duration of the assignment is twelve (12) months, starting in Mid-March 2024, with a possibility of extension. The consultant will be based at the Unitied Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) office in Rabat (Morocco).
