Who We Are

United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa)​

The umbrella organization for African local governments, was founded in 2005 in the City of Tshwane, South Africa as a result of the unification of three continental groups of local governments, namely the African Union of Local Authorities (AULA); the Union des Villes Africaines (UVA); and the Africa Chapter of the Unao dos Ciudades y Capitaes Lusofono Africana, (UCCL AFRICA).

UCLG Executive Bureau 2021

The 2021 UCLG Executive Bureau meetings will be held from 18 to 20 May under the theme: Care at the heart of local service provision for an inclusive recovery.

The business session of the Executive Bureau will take place on Thursday 20th preceded by a Policy Debate.

The Financial Management Committee and Committee on Statutory Affairs will meet respectively on the 18th and 19th.

The Executive Bureau will see several thematic sessions, as well as high-level policy dialogues.

ICLEI RISE Africa 2021

Our History

  • 1963

    On May 25th 1963 in Addis Abba, Ethiopia, 32 African states agreed to establish the Organization of African Unity (OAU). To commemorate this historic event May 25th is celebrated as Africa Day.

  • 1990

    Throughout the 1990s African leaders debated the need to amend the OAU’s structures to reflect the challenges of a changing world.

  • 1999

    September 9th 1999 the 4th Extraordinary Session of the OAU saw Heads of State and Government adopt the Sirte Declaration calling for the establishment of a new Africa Union. To commemorate this historic event September 9th is celebrated as Africa Union Day.

  • 2000

    The Lomé Summit adopted the Constitutional Act of the Union.

  • 2001

    The Lusaka Summit drew the roadmap for the implementation of the AU.

  • 2002

    The July 2002 Durban Summit launched the AU and convened the 1st Assembly of the Heads of State of the African Union.

  • 2013

    50th Anniversary

    The year 2013 marks the 50th Anniversary celebration of the founding of the Organization of African Unity.

  • 2015

    The Africa Union Heads of State and Government adopted Agenda 2063.
